August has come to an end!

It has been such a long month, yet there were not enough days! On the 9th August 2017, South Africa celebrated 61 years since women, from all races, stood together and fought for their freedom and rights. Over 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to hand in a petition against the pass laws. During the protest they broke into song:

“Now you have touched the women,

You have struck a rock,

You have dislodged a boulder,

You will be crushed”

Does that not give you the chills?

Untitled-2With the remembrance of these legendary women I dedicated this month to all Indian women in South Africa doing extraordinary things. In the past and now.It was eye-opening to see that South African Indian women have conquered nearly every field in South Africa. From politics, medicine, engineering, entertainment, sports to blogging and fashion.

So, here are 7 things I learned from these ladies:

  1. Procrastination is not always a bad thing. It may shine light on what is most important to you.
  2. Be different but more importantly be confident. There is nothing worse than wanting to stand out but can’t handle the attention. Because the most important thing that will make you different is your confidence.
  3. Hard work – I know, duh! But it is real. Effort is an important ingredient to success. If you follow any motivational accounts, they talk about how good failure is. But how can you achieve failure if you did not do anything. And from effort, hard work is born.
  4. Enjoy what you do. Personally, I hate the people that moan about their jobs and studies. It’s your life – do something that will make you happy every day. And be realistic! Yes, we all want to sit on the beach sipping Piña Colada every day – but we not, so until then do something that makes you excited every day. Don’t moan!
  5. Find your passion This is a toughie. Unfortunately, we all don’t know what we really want. The only solution is to try everything you can and from there you will get inspired and a passion will be created.
  6. Community service – There is an interesting quote by Mahatma Ghandi: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service to others” Nearly all the women I featured are involved in community service, either physically or financially. There must be a secret in giving back.
  7. Family is such a delicate ingredient in your life. And it depends on you as an individual. They are a twofold element. They either light the spirit in you or they satisfy their light within you. Either way if you confident on your goals (even if it was inspired by your family) no one (not even your family) can stop, you.

I hope I have inspired you to go out there and conquer your part of the world. Be proud of who you are. Many women fought for what we have now and so let’s thank them by honouring them and creating our own legacy for the generations to come.
